Water and salt management during typical annual cropping rotations are of paramount importance to agricultural sustainability in the lower Colorado River region. Crop production systems and rotations in this region utilize a number of irrigation application methods over the cropping season. The systems utilized and the management of these systems can have a profound impact on water delivered, leaching achieved, and resulting salt distribution profiles. YCEDA is coordinating a large multi-institution, cross-disciplinary project to quantitatively track water use and salt balance across typical crop production systems and rotations. Dr. Andrew French and Dr. Charles Sanchez discussed the project at our 2017 Research Symposium.
